Thin section bearings are precision-engineered components designed for high performance in applications where space, weight and noise levels are critical considerations. They are manufactured with narrow cross-sections and offer high load capacity, low noise and exceptional rotational accuracy — making them a reliable solution in demanding environments.
Thin section bearings for shaft sizes from 10mm to 80mm
We offer a wide range of thin section ball bearings designed for shaft sizes from 10mm up to 80mm, providing a versatile solution for many high-precision applications. Despite their slim profiles, these bearings are engineered to withstand significant loads while maintaining minimal rotational torque and exceptional high-speed accuracy.
The lightweight and compact design of these bearings makes them ideal where installation space is restricted, or weight reduction is a critical factor in overall system performance. Their narrow cross-section does not compromise strength, allowing them to deliver reliable, smooth operation even in dynamic or high-speed applications.
Whether you are designing robotics and automation systems, precision instruments, aerospace components or medical devices, these bearings offer consistent performance, reduced friction and long service life. Their combination of durability and precision ensures they can meet the demands of high-speed, high-accuracy and low-noise applications across a variety of industries.
With sizes spanning small-scale 10mm shafts for compact devices up to larger 80mm shafts for heavier machinery, our thin section bearings provide the perfect balance between strength, precision and space-saving design, giving engineers the flexibility to optimise both performance and efficiency in their systems.

Chrome steel ball bearings and temperature limits
Standard thin section bearings are made from high quality chrome steel, valued for its load carrying capacity and low operating noise. Chrome steel ball bearings with a steel retainer and a suitable lubricant, can be used at temperatures of 120 °C constant or up to 150 °C intermittent. Above these temperatures, the load capacity of chrome steel is reduced and the steel undergoes greater dimensional changes.
Please note: Chrome steel bearings aren't suitable for use in corrosive environments as the material is not corrosion resistant. Most of our chrome steel thin section bearings can be supplied with metal shields although the larger 6700 series bearings are only available with seals. Many sizes are available with rubber contact seals or low friction non-contact rubber seals.
Design and performance features
Thin section ball bearings are typically optimised for radial loads but can also support axial loads under certain conditions. Extra care is recommended for bearings in the 6700 series due to their shallower raceways, which make them more sensitive to misalignment under axial loads.
They exhibit excellent rotational accuracy and stability, ensuring smooth operation in dynamic and static conditions. Their design helps minimise power loss due to friction, enhancing system efficiency and operational lifespan.
Moreover, our chrome steel thin section bearings come with the added versatility of an outer ring flanged bearing option, providing customers with flexibility and adaptability to meet specific engineering requirements. Learn more in the product variants further down the page.
Shielding, sealing and lubrication options
Our thin section bearings are available in several configurations:
- Open bearings – Light oil lubricated
- Shielded bearings – Grease-lubricated (optionally with low-viscosity instrument oil)
- Sealed bearings – Rubber contact or non-contact seals for higher protection
Thanks to our in-house relubrication facility, these thin section bearings are also available with customer specified oils, greases or dry lubricants.
Cage types and construction
- 6700 series – Use a compact, one-piece crown cage due to ultra-thin design constraints
- 6800 and 6900 series – Typically fitted with two-piece ribbon cages
- Selected sizes are also available with TW nylon cages for high-speed applications
Installation considerations
Due to the thin cross-section, these bearings are more sensitive to deformation. Ensure excellent shaft and housing roundness to avoid excessive noise or vibration. Selecting the correct radial internal clearance is also critical — interference fits can reduce clearance by up to 80 per cent, impacting performance.
